Guide to Recommended Photoinitiator Models in the Common UV Curing Industry

01 Apr, 2025 5:08pm

Abstract:

In the UV curing industry, choosing the appropriate photoinitiator is the key to ensuring efficient curing and product quality. This article recommends photoinitiator models suitable for common UV curing industries, covering different application scenarios and requirements, helping you optimize the production process and improve product performance. Whether in the fields of coatings, inks, or adhesives, these recommended models can provide reliable support for your UV curing process.

In previous articles, we systematically explored the classification, working principles, and key factors for selecting photoinitiators, providing you with comprehensive theoretical guidance. Today, from the perspective of practical applications, we will deeply analyze the specific application scenarios of photoinitiators in different industries, helping you better understand how to efficiently utilize photoinitiators in actual production to improve product quality and production efficiency.

I. UV Cured Wood Coatings

Recommended photoinitiators: 184, 1173, BP, CBP

For the primer coat, benzophenone and tertiary amine photoinitiators can be used to reduce costs.

For the top coat with the requirement of yellowing resistance, photoinitiator 184 and MBF photoinitiator can be selected.

For white coatings, photoinitiator 819 and TPO photoinitiator can be used.

For dark-colored coatings, long wavelength photoinitiators such as 907 and DETX can be used.

II. UV Cured Plastic Coatings

Recommended photoinitiators: 1173, 184, 651

To mitigate oxygen inhibition of polymerization, an appropriate amount of benzophenone-based photoinitiators and tertiary amine-based photoinitiators can be added.

III. UV Cured Paper Varnishes

Recommended photoinitiators: 184, 1173, BP, CBP

IV. UV Cured Powder Coatings

Recommended photoinitiators: 819, TPO

V. UV Cured Waterborne Coatings

Recommended photoinitiators: 819DW, 2959, 150, ONE

VI. UV Cured Inks

Commonly used photoinitiators BP, 651, 1173, 184, MBF, ITX, 907, 369, TPO, 819, EMK, EHA, EDB, etc.

Classified by color:

White: photoinitiators TPO, photoinitiator 819, photoinitiator MBF

Black: photoinitiator 369 (or 379) is used in combination with ITX photoinitiator, and then with photoinitiator TPO or 819 photoinitiator.

Other colors: photoinitiator ITX is commonly used in combination with photoinitiator 907 or photoinitiator ITX is used in combination with photoinitiator 369.

VII. UV Cured Adhesives

Free radical type, recommended photoinitiators: Benzoin ethers, benzophenone, 651, 1173, 184, TPO, 819, etc.

Cationic type: Mainly based on sulfonium salt photoinitiators or iodonium salt photoinitiators.

For visible light adhesives: camphorquinone CQ is mainly used, or it is used in combination with photoinitiator TPO, 819, benzil and so on.

For UV-LED adhesives, recommended photoinitiators: ITX, DETX, TPO, TEPO, 819, etc. are used.
